Night Navigation on Dartmoor

Join us for a guided walk on Dartmoor and learn how to hike safely on the open moor and hills in the dark or poor visibility. We will teach you how to navigate using a map and compass and cover the essential skills needed to feel confident on your own hikes and adventures. Your night walk will be led by an experienced local qualified guide, all of our guides who lead this event are also active members of Dartmoor’s Search and Rescue team.

The Autumn and Winter months are a great time of year to get out for a walk but evenings draw in fast and can often catch people out who are not prepared. This event is a perfect for anyone who enjoys walking in the winter months, its a natural progression from our day time Navigation events and is good for people attending and progressing towards outdoor qualifications such as their Hill and Moorland leader award or their Mountain leader award.

 

 

On this event we will teach you and practice the following skills

    • Identifying features on the map
    • Setting your map and compass to the ground
    • Pacing and timing
    • Walking on a bearing
    • Using grid references
    • Dealing with emergencies
    • Navigation techniques and much more

The event will be held in the Burrator area of Dartmoor ,

Sorry no dogs , you will need both hands for map and compass work. The cost of this event is £35.00 Per person attending. Under 16s must be accompanied by a paying adult, recommended min age is 14 years and above

Course participants will need the following essential kit

  • Warm suitable outdoor clothing
  • Walking boots or similar
  • A winter hat
  • Head torch with spare batteries
  • A drink, warm preferably
  • Dartmoor OS map 1.25000 scale
  • A good working compass
  • Waterproofs

Can i bring my dog?

Sorry dogs are not welcome on this event, they can be a distraction to others and you will need both hands to navigate

What map do i need?

On this event we work from the Ordnance Survey map of Dartmoor on a 1.25k scale which is 0l28
